Every single time my girlfriend’s mom comes over, she walks in, scans the wall like she’s inspecting a rental, and bumps it down without asking. I’ll be comfortable at 72, turn around, and suddenly it’s 65 like we’re storing meat in here. Last visit I didn’t say anything. I just watched. The second she went to the bathroom, I quietly went outside to the breaker panel and flipped the AC off completely. Let her “fix” the temperature all she wanted. Nothing changed.
Ten minutes later she’s pressing buttons, frowning at the screen, asking why it’s not responding. I shrugged and said, “Maybe it doesn’t like being touched.” When she finally mentioned it felt warm, I told her this isn’t her house and if she wants control over the climate, she can host. I even taped that note on the wall after she left, bold and clear, so there’s no confusion next time.
Now my girlfriend says I “overreacted.” I say if someone treats my place like a public building, they can experience public level pettiness. I pay for the air in this house. If she wants Arctic conditions, she can go adjust her own thermostat.
