DENIED FOR BEING HEALTHY.

DENIED FOR BEING HEALTHY. I tore open the envelope expecting a date and a location, and instead it was a clean little rejection wrapped in “policy language” so it looks harmless. My doctor asked for a CT scan because something is going on, and the letter calmly shuts it down because I didn’t spend 20 years smoking. In their world, concern isn’t a medical thing, it’s a loyalty program and I haven’t collected enough damage points to redeem it.

The part that made my stomach drop is how confidently they say it. Not “we reviewed your symptoms,” not “the scan won’t help,” just a checkbox explanation that my lungs don’t qualify for being investigated yet. They even nod at the doctor’s reasoning, then immediately override it with a formula about cigarette history, as if the only valid path to care is waiting until something has already had time to get ugly.

So I’m standing there in my kitchen holding this paper with my name on it, being told the kind of imaging my doctor wants “isn’t supported” for my situation. My situation being that I’m trying to catch whatever this is early instead of showing up later as a cautionary tale. The message is loud, keep living until it becomes expensive enough to believe.
