I recently hired an electrician to swap out an outlet in my workshop and the bill ended up being $320. When I looked at what was actually done, I couldn’t help but feel a little confused. The job basically involved pulling the old outlet out of the box and connecting the same few wires to a new one that looks almost identical.
Watching the process, it seemed like the whole thing came down to loosening a couple screws, moving the wires over, and securing the new outlet in place. The wiring itself didn’t look complicated, and the new outlet is practically the same thing as the old one, just a different style with a couple extra ports.
I’m not trying to disrespect the trade at all, but from a homeowner’s point of view it looked like something that took only a short amount of time and very little material. Because of that, I’m honestly just trying to understand if $320 is a normal service call for something this straightforward or if I might’ve paid more than usual.
If anyone with electrical experience can explain what typically goes into pricing a job like this—whether it’s service call fees, minimum labor charges, or other factors—I’d genuinely appreciate the insight
