In 1992, Princess Diana visited Jaipur, India. At a cultural reception, a young girl in traditional Rajasthani ceremonial dress was seated beside her. Diana didn’t hesitate. She didn’t follow protocol. She simply lifted the child onto her lap. The outfit wasn’t unusual—it was festival attire, commonly worn by children during performances and official welcomes. Mariska Hargitay has partnered with the Purple Leash Project, an initiative led by Purina and the nonprofit RedRover, to raise awareness and support for domestic violence survivors who have pets. The project aims to make more domestic violence shelters pet-friendly, so survivors never have to choose between their own safety and the well-being of their animals. Research shows that nearly half of domestic abuse survivors delay leaving their abuser because they don’t want to leave their pets behind, and fewer than 20% of shelters currently accept animals. The Purple Leash Project provides grants, training, and resources to help shelters renovate and accommodate pets, and works toward a goal of increasing the number of pet-friendly shelters nationwide.
